2018 USA Games Team Maine Applications

Enclosed you will find the information and applications necessary to apply to be a member of Team Maine as an athlete, partner or coach for the 2018 Special Olympics USA National Summer Games.  This event will be held July 1st -6th, 2018, in Seattle, Washington.  Before completing either the Athlete or Coach Application, please consider the enclosed minimum standards one must meet to be selected (failure to comply with these standards, once selected, could result in replacement by an alternate athlete or coach).

Maine has been awarded a delegation of 29 athletes (which includes Unified Partners in 2 sports) and 9 coaches.  Opportunities to apply are as follows:

  • * Golf – this slot is for High Performance Standard Athlete and is already filled.

Athlete/Partner & Coach Requirements:
Minimum ATHLETE/PARTNER  Requirements:

  • Must have been a medal recipient (gold, silver or bronze), in any division of a 2015-2016 state level competition, in the sport you are applying for.
  • Must be willing to adhere to a training program set up by your USA Games Coach.
  • Must attend a 3-day (Fri-Sun) training camp (tentatively scheduled for May, 2018 – TBD).
  • Must provide his/her own transportation to training camp and any other meetings/destinations regarding the preparation for the games.
  • Must be able to obtain a physician’s signature on the USA Games Medical Release Form.
  • If not own guardian, must be able to obtain parent/guardian signature on USA Games Release Form.
  • Must be able to attend USA Games for the duration of July 1st – 6th (may also include 2 additional days of travel).
  • Must adhere to the “Athletes Code of Conduct” set forth by SOI.
  • Must plan to attend the 2018 Special Olympics Maine State Summer Games (June TBD)
Minimum COACH  Requirements:
  •  Must be available to attend USA Games for a duration of July 1st – 6th (may also include 2 days of travel).
  • Must attend a 3-day (Fri-Sun) training camp (tentatively scheduled for May, 2018 – TBD).
  • Must develop and monitor a training program for the USA Games athletes in your sport.
  • Must adhere to the “Coaches Code of Conduct” set forth by SOI.
  • Must provide own transportation to all meetings, trainings, etc (all pre-games preparations).
  • Must have current S. O. Certification in the sport for which you are applying.
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years coaching experience with S. O. athletes.
  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age by December 31, 2017.
  • Must be a registered “Class A” Volunteer
  • Must have current CPR certification at the time of the Team Maine Training Camp (TBD, May 2018)
  • Must be willing and able to serve as both a sport coach and an athlete chaperone for all activities leading up to and during the games (includes 24-hour/day supervision of athletes during games time).
  • Must be willing to distribute prescribed medication to athletes (if appropriate).
  • Must plan to attend the 2018 Special Olympics Maine State Summer Games (June TBD)

We are requesting that all applications be sent electronically via email.  Email completed applications to Ian Frank,  IanF@somaine.org.  We understand that this is a new process and at any time if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact our office.  If you decide to print the forms and complete manually, not recommended, please note that some of the information in the forms will not be visible. If your application can’t be emailed then next best option is to FAX applications to Ian Frank to fax number 1-888-490-0672. Deadline to have forms in to SOME office is April 12, 2017!
All applicants will be notified by May 10th, as to selection results.
