2020 Winter Games

2020 Winter Games

January 26-28, 2020

As the calendar creeps towards the New Year we find ourselves staring in the face of yet another Special Olympics Maine State Winter Games! This year’s State Winter Games will be held on January 26th-28th, 2020 at Sugarloaf Mountain. This email will be the ONLY notice you will receive about your first steps towards registering your Delegation to be a part of this year’s Games.”

SOME will once again be decreasing the quota of snowshoe athletes, while increasing the quota in other winter sports. Due to the limited size of the snowshoe venue and competition time constraints, we are encouraging teams to limit their number of snowshoe athletes, and encourage you to train and move those athletes who are capable, into Alpine, Cross Country Skiing or Speed Skating competitions. We’ll continue to offer Winter Coaches Training Schools, acquire equipment & secure training venues to help with this transition.

Again this year – To increase athlete participation we will accept all Area Delegation Winter Games Registrations with the following exceptions:

  • Due to the 7-year Area Rotation, Aroostook & Penobscot/Hancock/Piscataquis County Delegations will not be provided housing. Delegations in these areas can register as “Day Only” participants commuting in each day or find alternative housing. If housing is needed, it is suggested to book through rental companies like Home AwayAir Bnb or surrounding town hotels. Please do not contact Sugarloaf Mountain Co. directly!
  • Aroostook & Penobscot/Hancock/Piscataquis County Delegations cannot register any athlete in Snowshoe events unless participating in the 200m & 400m

SOME will ONLY send 2020 Winter Games registration information to the delegations that have been awarded Quotas so, please don’t hesitate – complete the form, today!

Click here to complete the 2020 Winter Games Quota Application. Deadline to complete is Friday, November 15th.

**Attention Alpine Skiers: On behalf of Special Olympics International (SOI) and SOME, we are working towards mandating that all Alpine Skiers race with an FIS-approved helmet. However, we are NOT mandating this for the upcoming 2020 State Winter Games.

Please note that additional information will be sent out shortly. If an alpine athlete is due for a new helmet this year, we suggest purchasing an FIS-approved helmet to prepare for the 2021 State Winter Games in which we WILL be mandating FIS helmets. Again, it is NOT required for an alpine athlete to have an FIS-approved helmet for the 2020 Winter Games.
