Camp Tall Pines
Camp Tall Pines offers year-round vacationing experiences to persons with intellectual disabilities. It is located on 5 1/2 acres on Lower Range Pond in Poland, Maine and was founded in 1968. Through 1992 Camp Tall Pines was used solely as a summer day camp for the residents of Pineland Center. It was operated by Pineland staff and funded by The Camp Tall Pines Foundation, a private non-profit organization. Camp Tall Pines offered a traditional summer camp and waterfront activities to Pineland residents of all ages.
In January of 1993, Pineland Center deeded Camp Tall Pines to Special Olympics Maine and has been owned and operated by Special Olympics Maine since. Special Olympics Maine has increased the use of Camp Tall Pines by offering overnight camping to persons with intellectual disabilities, hosting up to 32 campers weekly from all over the state of Maine.
Camp Tall Pines offers a formal Summer Season (June - August) consisting of 10-1 week (Monday through Friday) vacation opportunities as well as a first come first serve option for non-summer season vacationing. Accommodations provided include:
- 2 - self contained cabins, wheelchair accessible, 3 bedroom, fully insulated and heated cabins with kitchen/dining area, living room, bathroom and laundry that sleep 9 individuals comfortably.
- 2- self contained open room cottages with eight beds in each. These cottages each have electricity, bathroom, a mini refrigerator and monitor heaters. (only available May-October)
- Seasonal Recreation Hall - large open building with full gender specific bathrooms where campers can enjoy arts & crafts, games, puzzles, movies, music and more! (only available May-October)
- Seasonal Kitchen - large full kitchen facility. Great for cooking for large groups! (only available May-October)
Camp Tall Pines is available for use by any school/agency providing services to persons with intellectual disabilities on a scheduled basis. Sending school/agency must provide a camper to staff ration of no less than 3 to 1. Camper supervision will be solely the responsibility of the sending school/agency.
Camp Tall Pines is run on the philosophy of "vacation." On "Vacation" people relax, do what they want, when they want and enjoy the the company they share it with! Camp Tall Pines provides many activities throughout the year but it is up to the campers and their support staff to plan their daily activities while at camp. Activities include but limited to:
Spring, Summer & Fall Season: Arts & crafts, basketball, board games & puzzles, bocce, boating, camp fires, canoeing, fishing, swimming & tennis
Winter Season: Cross country skiing, ice fishing, sledding & snowshoeing
