Cumberland County Spring Games

May 10 @ 8:00 am - 2:30 pm

Special Olympics Cumberland County Area Track and Field Meet 2024

When : Friday May 10, 2024 (Rain date May 17)
Where : Bonny Eagle Athletic Facilities, Buxton/Standish, Maine

NEW Registration Process THIS YEAR

Special Olympics Maine is piloting a new registration format for Head of Delegations. HODs will
now be using Excel to complete full Delegation Registrations! This will allow the HOD to see
their full roster (Coaches AND Athletes) at one time. HODs will be able to save a copy of their
registration to their computer for their record, along with being able to work on rosters
periodically leading up to the deadline, instead of completing registrations online without being
able to save their progress! Stay tuned for emails regarding this new process!!

Medical : Coaches must have submitted all required registration information to the Special
Olympics Maine state office and bring copies of all medical and release forms day of event for
athletes to participate. You will be asked to sign an acknowledgement that you in fact have them
with you. Athlete releases are good for life and medicals are good for 3 years from the date of
physician’s signature. If you need blanks they can be obtained through the state office of
Special Olympics Maine at 525 Main St. Unit D, South Portland 04106 tel #879-0489 or on the
State Special Olympic Website.

Coaches: You should all have filled out the Class A volunteer form and taken the behaviors
training online. More info contact Sarah Phelps at the SO State Office 879-0489.
Again this year: We will be presenting place ribbons as opposed to participation ribbons as
mandated by Special Olympics rules. Presentation of ribbons will take place immediately after
all running,, walking, wheelchair, and assisted events . Award areas for each venue can be
found on the attached map. Ribbons for all field events will be mailed out after the event. It is
extremely important that all athletes run in their assigned running/walking heats, and there will
be no changing of heats allowed. Please help out by making everyone involved with your teams
aware of this.

Unified Champion School® will be offering Unified Sport opportunities. Existing Unified
Champion School ® Schools and/or new schools are encouraged to participate in either Unified
4x100m Relay. If you are a school not yet involved in Unified Champion Schools®, and you
would like more information, contact Ian Frank at IanF@somaine.org. 4x100m Relay will be
offered to all age levels. Each of these opportunities require teams of 4 to compete (2 athletes &
2 unified partners).

Events Reminders:
1. Track events take precedence over field events. Athletes can always make up field
events because of time conflicts with running events.
2. No pacing allowed; athletes will be disqualified.
3. Athletes participating in the 10m assisted walk and/or the 25m walk may not participate
in any running events. These two events are for athletes with limited motor skills.
4. Athletes may participate in a maximum of 3 events plus relays.
5. When signing up athletes for running long jump please be aware that it is a foul to step
over line and attempt will not count.
6. Athletes participating in Walks will be Disqualified if they run.

Parade/ Opening Ceremonies :

Begins at 9:20; Teams please line up outside of the track
near registration (see venue map). Starting point is at the gate. Prepare your delegation to walk
around the track and be announced. Teams are encouraged to bring banners and/or posters
identifying your team if you have some.

Day of Event :

ONE PERSON FROM EACH TEAM SHOULD Sign in beginning at 8:15 am.
Registration will be set up near the scoreboard at the end of track as marked on enclosed map.
When you arrive you will receive a packet containing a letter, name tags for athletes (already
filled out), name tags for coaches and chaperones, additional copies of map (please copy and
make maps available to all coaches and people who will be bringing athletes ahead of their
arrival), and a copy of your registration.
AGAIN THIS YEAR- Athletes will be lining up in staging tents not at starting lines

Concessions: There will be the following Food Trucks available for athletes, families, and
coaches to buy snacks, lunch items, and drinks (CASH suggested):
Poppies Kettle Corn
Kelly’s Ice Cream
Fred’s Fried Dough
Cheese The Day
Omi’s Haus
Pinky D’s Poutine

Group Area: Field space for teams who bring shade tents, lawn chairs, and blankets is
available as shown on the attached map.

PLEASE Remember that this event is for our athletes and being flexible is the key to have it be
successful for everyone; many people are volunteering their time and energy. Please feel free
to contact Lisa McGlone ( lmcglone@bonnyeagle.org) if you have any questions about the
facilities or events.

Registration Deadline : Friday April 26, 2024 is the final deadline for registering. We would
appreciate it greatly if at all possible you send your registrations early as there is a lot of prep
work involved in setting this up.

*We are asking that everyone who can carpool please do!
Please give right-of-way to bus drivers and those transporting athletes
There are three drop-off points for Special Olympics Athletes this year –
Bonny Eagle Middle School – GYM LOOP/TENNIS COURTS – off Saco Road – Standish –
This is a paved flat area that will allow easy access to the track areas, and wheelchairs to be
unloaded quickly and safely.

Bonny Eagle Middle School – FRONT LOOP – 92 Sokokis Trail – Buxton
Unload at the first curve, go through gates to the right of the building, and walk along the
building to the field area. (Please use this for students who are more ambulatory and are able to
walk a short distance)

Bonny Eagle High School – Loop – 700 Saco Road – Standish – This is a paved flat area that
will allow easy access to the track areas and wheelchairs to be unloaded quickly and safely. It
is, however, much further away from the wheelchair events.

Buses transporting delegations can park at the MSAD 6 Transportation Department facility
located at 715 Bonny Eagle Road in Buxton. Once parked, drivers may walk to the event
through wooded paths located near home plate and/or left field southwest of the facility.
Please stay tuned for additional information regarding bus, van, and car parking. We are
Still confirming anticipated parking options for the day of the event. Thank you for your patience.
