Winter Sports Coaches Trainings

  Alpine Skiing Coach Certification Course Registration

                                                Special Olympics Maine and the Adaptive Outdoor Education Center (AOEC) are partnering together to provide a comprehensive on snow training for Special Olympics Maine Alpine Skiing Coaches led by the AOEC Alpine Skiing Coaches.

  • 12/22/2023 @ Lost Valley – Friday December 22nd, 2023 from 9am-3pm at Lost Valley in Auburn.
    *9:30am-3pm – Registration, start by 10am in the lodge for “classroom” session, break for lunch and then on the mountain for the remainder of the day.*

  • 01/09/2023 @ Hermon Mountain– Tuesday January 9th, 2023 from 2pm-7pm (tentative) at Hermon Mountain in Hermon
    *Same schedule as above, just later start time*

Cross Country Skiing & Snowshoeing Training Day Registration

Special Olympics Maine is offering 1 more Cross Country Skiing & Snowshoeing training day for coaches and athletes.  This will be a fun day to provide coaches an opportunity to work towards their sport certifications in Cross Country Skiing & Snowshoeing!

  • 01/05/2023 @ Pineland Farms – Friday January 5th, 2023 from 9am-3pm at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester.
    • Coaches that attend will go through our sport certification course and athletes will have the opportunity to be on-snow developing their skills.  All participants should be prepared to be active during on-snow sessions.
    • Each sport will have on-snow active sessions that will last 1-2 hours long. All participants should come prepared to be outside (in cold elements) with proper winter apparel (ski pants, jacket, hat, gloves, eye protection etc).
    • It is recommended to bring your own snowshoe and/or cross country ski equipment however additional equipment or rental equipment will be available for those that do not have their own at their own cost.

Winter Games Specific Sport Information

Please make sure you read the following information to make sure you know how to register Athletes for our specific sports! Athletes are only allowed to compete in ONE Winter Games Sport!

Alpine / Dual Ski

  • Alpine Athletes cannot compete in any other sport; however, they may register for up to 3 events in their ability level.
    • Beginner – events include 10m walk, Gilde & Super Glide
    • Novice, Intermediate and Advanced – events include the Super G, Slalom & Giant Slalom.
    • Dual Ski – events include the Slalom & Giant Slalom

Cross Country Skiing

  • Cross Country Skiing athletes cannot compete in any other sport; however, they may enter in up to 2 events in one Ability Level. Cross Country Skiing athletes are encouraged to provide their own equipment for this event.
    • Ability Levels
      • 25M Classical Race + 50M Classical Race
      • 50M Classical Race + 100M Classical Race
      • 100M Classical Race + 500M Classical Race
      • 500M Classical Race + 1K Classical race or 3K Classical Race
      • 1K Classical Race + 3K Classical Race

Snowshoeing

  • Snowshoeing athletes cannot compete in any other sport; however, they may enter in up to 2 events in one Ability Level. All Snowshoeing athletes are encouraged to provide their own equipment for this event.
    • Ability Levels
      • 25M Race + 50M Race
      • 50M Race + 100M Race
      • 200M Race + 400M Race

Speed Skating

  • Speed Skating athletes cannot compete in any other sport; however, they may enter in up to 3 events within one Ability Level. Speed Skaters must provide their own equipment including a helmet (required) for this event.
    • Ability Levels
      • 25M Race + 55M Race
      • 111M Race + 222M Race + 333M Race
      • 500M Race + 777M Race + 1000M Race
