Penobscot, Piscataquis & Hancock Counties Bowling
October 9, 2019N/A
Regional Special Olympics: Penobscot, Piscataquis & Hancock Counties
New this year! Bowling Training Sessions for Athletes!
Athlete training is a critical part of Special Olympics. Athletes are required to complete a minimum of 8 training sessions prior to competition. We understand there are costs associated with bowling practice. We are happy to work with Family Fun Lanes in Bangor to offer 2 days where athletes can practice at no cost!
Training Tuesday will be offered on 9/24 & 10/1 from 12-2pm at Family Fun Lanes. During this time athletes registered to compete in our Regional competition may practice, under the supervision of their team Coach, at no cost. Coaches are responsible to ensure all athletes have up to date medicals on file at the State office and are asked to email Sue Uhlenhake to reserve the amount of desired lanes at firstname.lastname@example.org prior to the training day. Teams will also be asked to sign in all athletes at the front desk of the bowling alley. Outside of these times, teams may practice at a reduced free of $3 per athlete, per game, shoes included. We are very excited about this opportunity to encourage more training!

We are very grateful to Paul Ciarrocchi our previous Bowling Event Chair for his diligent work over the years to make this event a great one, and we wish him well as he retires from this role. We would like to introduce Sue Uhlenhake as our new Regional 10 Pin Bowling (and Candlepin Bowling) Event Chair.
Sue started working with adults with IDD in 2011 at OHI; that same year, she started coaching and participating as a partner with Special Olympics. She currently works for MERT Enterprises, where she is a Special Olympics Coach in Bowling, Athletics, Bocce and Swim. Sue was a member of Special Olympics Maine Team in 2018 that traveled to Seattle for the USA Games where she was a member of a unified team that won a silver medal. She also continues to be a member of the OHI High Flyers unified softball team that has participated in both the Massachusetts and Vermont State Games.
Sue and her wife Bev have 3 beautiful children, Ben, Ansley and Quinn, and the most adorable little puppy in the world.
Sue played softball, basketball and soccer in high school and then softball and soccer while attending Husson University. She also coached softball at Hermon High School for 5 years. Sports have given Sue opportunities that she would not have otherwise had, such as traveling to England, Holland and Belgium to play soccer with the American Soccer Ambassadors. We are very happy to have her as part of our team!
As a reminder, Certified Coaches are required for all Regional Events.
SOME is offering two 10-Pin Bowling Coach's Training School opportunities for coaches to become a certified Coach (each limited to the first 12 coaches that register).
Coach Education Policy: ALL registered coaches (Head of Delegation, Head Coaches & Assistant Coaches) must have a current certification for the following; Class A Volunteer Screening, Protective Behaviors Course and Concussion Awareness and Safety Recognition Course. You can find these documents/links on the State website at www.somaine.org/sports/coachs-corner/become-a-coach/.
Head of Delegation: This person is responsible for the entire delegation including; athletes, head coaches and assistant coaches. This person will send and receive pertinent information to and from Special Olympics regarding; registration forms, athlete unified partner and coach requirements.
Head Coach Requirements: Every delegation must assign one certified head coach for every sport that they have athletes competing in. This person is responsible for the entire sports team training including; athletes, unified partners and assistant coaches.
Medicals & Consent Forms: ALL Athletes must have current medical & consent forms on file at Special Olympics Maine's State Office. It is your responsibility to insure that these (2) (current/completed) forms are on file at the state office, for every athlete you plan to bring to the games. If we already have a medical on file for an athlete and it is less than three years old, you don't need a new one, unless there has been a significant physical/medical change in one of your athletes. You may email Lauren at LaurenL@somaine.org to check on medicals in your file. We recommend that you make two additional copies of each medical/release form - keep one file of all medicals in a safe place and have a file with all your athletes' medicals that travels with you to events. Blank Medical and Consent Forms can be downloaded by going to our website: www.somaine.org/sports/athlete-resources/.
If you have any questions about the registration process feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
