

Our History
From a small summer camp in Maine to a worldwide movement for inclusion, Special Olympics has been changing lives through sports, health, leadership, and community since 1968.
Special Olympics Maine has proudly been part of that movement from the very beginning – helping create opportunities for athletes with intellectual disabilities across our state for more than 50 years.
1968 — The Movement Begins
The first International Special Olympics Games were held at Soldier Field in Chicago, launching a global movement for inclusion through sports.
1969 — Maine Joins the Movement
The first International Special Olympics Games were held at Soldier Field in Chicago, launching a global movement for inclusion through sports.
1970 — The First Winter Games
Special Olympics Maine organized what is believed to be the world’s first Special Olympics Winter Games in Gorham.
1984 — Law Enforcement Torch Run Launches
Maine held its first Law Enforcement Torch Run, beginning a decades-long partnership between law enforcement and Special Olympics athletes.
2008 — Unified Champion Schools® Expands Inclusion
Special Olympics Maine launched Unified Champion Schools®, bringing inclusive sports and leadership opportunities to schools across the state.
2019 — Celebrating 50 Years
Special Olympics Maine celebrated 50 years of athlete achievement, inclusion, and community impact.
