Soccer is one of the most popular sports at Special Olympics Maine. Athletes of all ages and ability levels build confidence, teamwork, communication, and fitness while competing in a fast-paced and supportive team environment.
Whether learning the fundamentals or competing as part of a team, soccer creates opportunities for athletes to grow on and off the field.
Special Olympics Maine offers several ways for athletes to participate:
Individual Skills Competition
Designed for athletes who are developing foundational soccer skills or are not yet ready for team play. Individual Skills Competition helps athletes build confidence while developing the fundamentals of the game. Athletes compete in three skill events: dribbling, shooting, and run and kick.
5-a-Side Soccer
5-a-Side Soccer emphasizes teamwork, communication, passing, and strategy in a smaller team format. With five players on the field, athletes enjoy a fast-paced game that encourages skill development and collaboration.
5-a-Side Unified Soccer
Unified Soccer brings athletes and Unified Partners together on the same team to train and compete side by side. Through shared competition, athletes build friendships, teamwork, and leadership while creating a more inclusive community.
